An unforgetable experience in a Bangkok theatre
Words can always lead to some misunderstanding especially when they are used in the context that is not shared by both the speaker and the listener. My experience tells me exactly this.
Last week, I went to the theatre in a well-to-do area in Bangkok. The play was very interesting but I did not enjoy it. There was a young man and a young woman sitting behind me. They were talking loudly. I turned round and looked at them angrily, but they did not pay any attention. I felt that other people in the audience were annoyed too, but probably, I thought, it was part of Thai culture not to say anything. The young man and the young woman seemed to enjoy their conversation very much and their discussion was louder and louder. It was so loud that I could not hear the actors. In the end, I could not bare it. I turned round again and said, "I can't hear a word!" The young man looked at me angrily and said, "It's none of your business. This is a private converstion!" Poor me, what I immediately did was to stand up and walked out of the theatre. As soon as I got out of the building, I had to run quickly into a nearby restaurant and hid because I saw a few young men who were sitting behind me in the theatre following me and carrying some big sticks. They could have a gun, but I did not wait to see.
Enough is enough. Next time I will have to keep my mouth shut, and let the bad guys rule our society, like all the Thai do. The incident taught me to be more careful about when to talk and what to talk. Eventhough when you are right, words can always betray you and be interpreted differently by different people.
