Group Homes, A Beneficial Environment for many Teens
Introduction
Group homes are an effective environment for many adolescents that have been abused sexually, emotionally or have just been neglected. Many people would have you believe that group homes are not are much worse than alternative options but in reality there aren¡¦t any places that are better for theses children. There aren¡¦t better alternatives there are worse ones. These children are not eligible to live in foster care, and the situation at home is either not controllable or is not safe for them. Many adolescents that enter group homes have serious physiological problems and their development has taken an unfortunate turn, usually because of a traumatic experience in their lives. It is in the setting of a group home that these adolescents can receive the proper care that they require because of these unfortunate circumstances. The group homes help the child reack their potential development expectations. The staff and treatment has been specifically designed to help the children develop a positive outlook on life and change their world view, giving them experiences that give them a better perspective on why life can be good. By no means does this mean that the adolescents are only given praise, and do everything they are told to just because they live in the group home. That is not the case, often the children rebel and this also has a large impact on the treatment. It is so because if they rebel, lash out and begin to misbehave they are punished, their consequences are all ¡§Natural or Logical¡¨ (Easy, Corri). On many occasions the adolescents have had extensive and severe punishments or very little at all, so this is a new concept to them and becomes an important instrument in their treatment.
