1984 Comparison With Equilibrium

The primary purpose of a totalitarian government is to seize complete control and power from its surroundings, especially from its citizens. This idea of complete power and equal sharing of all objects of life may seem as a productive idea, but this idea always disintegrates due to the selfishness of all men. When comparing the Brotherhood and Oceania in Nineteen Eighty-Four by George Orwell with the Underground and Libria in the movie Equilibrium, directed by Kurt Wimmer, it becomes evident that they parallel each other in various manners.
The Brotherhood is a symbol of hate against the Party. This hatred increases the loyalty of each individual towards the government. The Brotherhood is said to be completely against all actions and worldviews of the Party, and that their primary goal is for the destruction of the totalitarian government. O'Brian, an Inner Party member explains that the Brotherhood cannot be destroyed: "The brotherhood cannot be wiped out because it is not an organization in the ordinary sense. Nothing holds it together except an idea which is indestructible. You will never have anything to sustain you, except the idea" (183). This shows that it is not the actual organization that is important, but rather it is the idea of rebellion which is of utmost importance. Although the Brotherhood might only be an imaginary group, the sole idea of intimidation ensures that no individual will ever think of rebelling against the Party. The individuals of the Brotherhood carry the last memories and connections to the time before the rule of the Party.
The Underground is a group of individuals who oppose the rules of the government of Libria. They seek to destroy the government, along with its goals and power. The members of the Underground are willing to sacrifice their own lives to destroy the party in Libria. The government in Libria does not tolerate any rebellion.
