Mitch Albom was born May 23, 1958 in Passaic, New Jersey. He graduated from Brandeis University with a sociology major. While in college, he met and studied under professor Morrie Schwartz, the inspiration for his well known book Tuesdays with Morrie. In 1982, Albom earned masters degrees in journalism and business administration from Columbia University. Albom then began his career as a sports journalist. This employed him from 1985 to 1995 when he began gathering notes for Tuesdays with Morrie.
Albom is the author of seven books, the host of a radio program for ABC Radio, and has founded two charities in the Detroit area: "The Dream Fund" which allows disadvantaged children to become involved with the arts and "A Time to Help," which brings volunteers together once a month to staff shelters, build homes with Habitat for Humanity, and operate meal programs for the elderly. He also serves on several charitable boards. Albom currently resides in Franklin, Michigan. The Five People You Meet In Heaven was based on a story he was told as a child by his Uncle Eddie.
The novel is one hundred and ninety-six pages long with fourteen main chapters. Chapters are further divided into subchapters of flashbacks and birthdays and Earth time/postmortem time. Most of the novel takes place in heaven and time is not conceivable. After Eddie's death, about one week of postmortem time is covered through the novel. The setting is present time, Ruby Pier, an amusement park along a great gray ocean. The plot is that Eddie, an amusement park mechanic dies trying to save a little girl's life. The novel begins with Eddie's last hour of life. After his death, he finds himself in heaven where he learns that he will meet five people who will explain the meaning of his life.
