Abortions

Have you ever wondered why woman have abortions? Believe it or not, there are many reasons why they do. Recent studies have shown that the abortion rate has increased over the past few years. In 1996, statistics showed that 91.9% of woman have abortions every year. (Abortion Rates- graph-) These rates of abortion are extremely high, and should be lowered. Women who have abortions don't seem to care that they are ending a human life, and because abortion ends a human life, it is absolutely the wrong decision to make.
An abortion is a surgical procedure. It is performed in order to end pregnancy by removing the fetus and placenta from a woman's uterus. There are also other names for an abortion, such as induced abortion, suction curettage, and surgical abortion.
The procedure of an abortion can be either simple or complicated. At seven weeks or less a woman is given medication to terminate the pregnancy. It can take from three days to 3-4 weeks. This sometimes doesn't work and is rarely used. If a woman is seven to twenty-four weeks into pregnancy, she will have to have a suction abortion. In this process, the cervix is numbed, the cervical canal is enlarged, and then a hollow tube is inserted into the uterus. A vacuum (suction) machine is used to remove tissues (fetus and placenta) from the uterus. After the surgery oxytocin (medicines) are given so the uterus muscles contract and reduce bleeding.
Although the procedure, at seven to twenty-four weeks is not that complicated, the procedure at twenty-two weeks can be extremely difficult. The procedure becomes more complicated because at this point the baby has already developed most of it's organs and is formed into a human figure. The only type of abortion that could be used would be for the mother to induce early labor, which could take from a few minutes to several days.
