About A Boy
You Cannot buy Love
One of my favorite singers once said, "Love can move mountains." In fact, that became a title to one of her songs. I'm talking about Celine Dion. It is a true statement as well. As I have come to learn, love is not something that you just hand out in the beginning of a relationship. Sometimes love has to be earned. However, it may become difficult to love some people because they have never known true love themselves.
Will Freeman is the kind of man that I can assume has never acquired any form of real love in his lifetime. In this movie, About A Boy we are given the rare chance to glimpse into the thoughts and actions of Will and Marcus. Sometimes we can see the actions someone makes and think to ourselves that the person did something unintentionally to hurt someone's feelings. However, this movie leaves little room for us to sympathize with Will and his actions because his thoughts are played as narrative while he is performing most actions. In chapter 13 we learned about understanding and communicating our emotions. We learned that emotions are transient and volatile. Emotions are conditional that vary in quality, they motivate our behavior and most people seem to perceive emotions as involuntary. We also learned that people who are very aware of their emotions are perceived as having a high amount of affective orientation. In the case of Will Freeman I think he is sincerely high in affective orientation. Will would like to believe that he is master of his emotions and the emotions of those around him.
From the beginning, Will plays the role as a self induced super ego with a fascination for lying. When he is having his first dinner with Angie, Will consciously lies to Angie about liking kids. Even though Will knows he does not like kids, will plays the role of, "Will the good guy." He even admits to himself that playing this role is becoming a bit tedious, "It was hard being wonderful...
