The Academy Awards have been known since 1977 to nominate romances and dramas. 1977 was the last year that a romantic comedy won Best Picture at the Academy Awards. The past themes for the Best Picture award was seemingly stuck in a "forbidden love" rut for several years there was Braveheart 1995, The English Patient 1996, Titanic 1997, Shakespeare in Love 1998, American Beauty 1999,and Gladiator 2000. They eventually climbed out of their rut in 2001 with A Beautiful Mind and have remained out of it with this year's Best Picture Award Chicago. I don't think there is anyone that wouldn't agree with me when I say that the Academy Awards Best Picture is not always the "Best Picture".
Watching Chicago I had the disturbed feeling that I was watching a very bad dream. I found the Broadway scenes tedious and overdone almost filmed as a time filler and I found the story line terribly sexist and stereotypical the movie ended like I initially thought it would and trust that I'm no movie connoisseur. It was terribly predictable and it played on sexism and gender stereotypes and dreams. I was not impressed and sadly not surprised I watched the film because it was the Academy Award winner for best picture this year and I supposed it should be a decent film, however when half way through the film I realized it was a flop I was reminded of 1999's best picture award American Beauty, American Beauty was a terrible movie in my point of view, I found the symbolism so in-your-face that it shouldn't even be regarded as symbolism and the characters were phony and dislikeable. What world hating skeptic of a teen is on the cheerleading squad? It's not a stereotype girls on the cheerleading team are always, trust me I've met numerous girls from numerous different teams, and I mean always school spirited, bouncy, happy girls.
