Acid Base Titration
Aim: To find out the concentration of hydrochloric acid.
Introduction: To carry out a titration using an alkaline (NaOH) strength/concentration known to find the concentration of HCL (molar).
Apparatus and reagents:
Funnel
20cm³ pipette
Pipette bulb
50cm³ burette and burette stand
3 100 cm³ conical flasks
White tile
100cm³ 0.10m NaOH
100³ cm unknown concentration HCl
0.1% methyl orange indicator
Standard Operating Procedure:
1. Set up your burette and stand so that a conical flask can fit under it.
2. Transfer the HCl solution that you will be using to a small beaker (make sure you have rinsed the beaker with the same HCl solution)
3. Run a small amount of HCl through the burette and allow it to run the tap into a beaker.
4. Fill the burette with HCl using a funnel (the burette doesn't have to be completely full). Remove the funnel and get of any water bubbles.
5. Take the first reading from your burette, to two decimal places. Record it in your table.
6. Rinse your pipette with the NaOH solution. Pipette 20cm³ into a conical flask.
7. Add 3 drops of methyl orange indicator to your NaOH solution swirl around. (Not you, the solution)
8. Bring the conical flask under the burette with one hand; turn the tap of the burette with the other. As the HCl is released, keep swirling the conical flask.
9. Once you begin to see color change, adjust the tap so that it releases the HCl slowly drop by drop, until the color changes is throughout the solution keep swirling with the other hand (stop the release of HCl as close as possible to the point when the solution just changes color.
10. Once...
