Affirmative Action

Beginning in the middle 20th century, the United States began to address the issue regarding the equality of women and the minority in the workplace as well as in educational facilities and other organization. The plan was to offer these groups an equal and just opportunity to provide their services or skills and to advance their status in American society. Employers and admissions officers would be required to integrate their communities with workers of both sexes and all races. The plan was called affirmative action and it has been in debate since it's beginnings.
"It was president Lyndon B. Johnson who first used the actual phrase ‘affirmative action' in 1965 in his Executive Order 11246 and who later modified the Executive Order in 1967 to include women" (Sykes, 1). However, there were many steps taken towards equality before the idea of affirmative action had even been proposed. The thirteenth, fourteenth and fifthteenth amendments were all created to stop segregation and enforce equality amongst the races and sexes. "There was also the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission that was used to enforce the anti-bias employment provisions of the act" (Civil Rights Glossary, 1).
"Affirmative action is a term used to describe techniques to remedy the effects of existing and past discrimination" (Guernsey, 8). The main purpose of affirmative action was to create more unity amongst all companies, schools, and organizations by accepting or hiring people based on the diversity of the general population. Although it was an attempt for unity and more opportunity and not a way of excluding the majority, many people have become very angry over the issue.
The problem is that by adopting the policy, the organization is promoting discrimination as well as harming the minority. Because the policy is race based, it keeps America from evolving into the color-blind society where people are judged solely on ability....
