Have you ever been treated differntly because of your race? the way you look? or even cause you act differntly from other people? If you have,then you are a victim of discrimination. Discrimination takes away equal opportunity and rights from minorities. To battle this discrimination, we need affirmative action to implement equal opportunity in America and to correct the imbalances in American institutions.
Discrimination in America originated all the way back from the colonial era. At that time, African Americans were taken away from Africa and sent to America to become slaves. The discrimination of minorities is still present to this day. An example of this modern day discrimination is best represented by crime. In a research done by the Department of Justice, if a minority and white male committed similar drug charges, the minority will face doubled the prison time than the white male. In addition, blacks and Hispanics make up fifty percent of the population in prisons, while only making up making up thirty one percent of the America's population. People will probably argue that these two races commit more crimes, but according to the Department of Health, the use of drugs is greater by white people than minorities.
Discrimination is not only present in prison, but in everday life. In Florida, a black person is seventy five percent more likely to be pulled over by a police than a white person. In 1991 in an ABC exclusive with, a white and black male with similar prefences were filmed to see the daily discrimination in its works. The white male received lower prices at car dealerships while the black male didn't receive any. Along with the unfair discount, white male didn't arouse any attention from the police, but on the other hand, police cars slowed down to take notice of the black male.
