Just when we all thought United States of America was trying to move away from racial discrimination, President Johnson in 1965 introduced, what is now clearly known as, affirmative action. ""This is the next and more profound stage of the battle for civil rights," Johnson asserted. "We seek
not just equality as a right and a theory, but equality as a fact and as a result"" (Brunner). President Johnson obviously used the word "equality," but where is the equality in affirmative action? Is equality when an African American under qualified student gets to attend a highly respected medical school over a qualified Caucasian student just because the school needs to fill its "quotas" on African American or minority students? Hmm
I don't see the equality there at all, better yet I see something else there; I see racism or discrimination over non-minority students. And the best part of all of this racism and discrimination is that it's legal! People are still being refused for jobs in the medical department and students are denied an education from a state university.
Is it safe, as doctors, to let less qualified minorities prosper and get jobs over the more qualified non-minority population? Who would you rather perform your neurological brain surgery, the person who got the job because of his/hers skills and talents, or the person who got the job because the company needed to fill a race quota at the end of the year? Also, some of the doctors that were hired off of affirmative action, turned out to be, not-so-good doctors in the end. Jeff Jacoby explains one circumstance that went fatal, because of affirmative action took place in one hospital in California, "Eight weeks ago, warning of Chavis's "inability to perform some of the most basic duties required of a physician," the Medical Board of California suspended his license.
