Como Agua, Para Chocolate is a story about two lovers caught between old fashion traditions and exercises and the obstacles they overcome during the height of the Mexican Revolution. Tita and Pedro, the two young lovers, were forced into a situation neither one of them wanted. Pedro goes to Mama Elena to ask for Tita's hand in marriage. The old tradition of the youngest daughter (Tita) to remain in the home and care for her mother prevents Pedro from marrying Tita, and instead marries Tita's older sister, Rosaura, in an attempt to remain close to Tita. One important factor to consider in this story is the scene of the kitchen, where Tita spends most of her day. Here Tita prepares the wedding cake for her sister's marriage. The event of her sister marrying the man she loves is so overwhelming she begins to cry. Her tears fall in the batter and a strange occurrence happens during the wedding, where anyone who ate the cake were suddenly engulfed in a wave of emotion and began remembering the ones they once loved, including Mama Elena. The importance of the kitchen is the transposing of Tita's emotion to the food she makes, and anyone who consumes it will feel what she feels. An example of this is with the "mole". Her family eats the mole and begins to feel strong, orgasmic feelings, which consequently enables her other sister, Gertrudis, to escape the ranch with a Mexican Revolutionary. When Pedro and Rosuara have their first baby, Tita takes care of him. Mama Elena sees this and convinces Rosuara and Pedro to move away to San Antonio. Because of this, the baby dies and Mama Elena blames this on Tita. Tita finally tells her mother what she thinks of her and falls into a deep depression. After the death of Mama Elena, Tita feels free, but soon realizes that Rosuara has plans to continue with Mama Elena's tradition with her second baby, Esperanza.
