Ai In Games
Artificial Intelligence in Gaming.
AI within the games industry is said to be getting better, some experts predict that in 3 to 5 years time AI will be a major part of this multi million pound industry. There are various tasks that can be applied to modern computer games by using AI techniques. Usually these tasks will be limited to characters within the game with screen layout and graphics already achieved.
By using AI techniques some traditional games like Go-Moku have been solved. Another great achievement was IBM's chess computer Deep Blue', which beat then world chess champion Kasparov. Deep Blue used a searching method rather than knowledge and the win was most likely down to computer power.
At present, most computer games use A* Algorithm, which is a modern version of Dijkstra's shortest-path algorithm. As games become more realistic and challenging new methods will need to be found by game companies. This is when AI in games will become a major factor.
As you may well know most computer games give the player plenty of options and levels, but this seems not to be good enough. One of the biggest interests on the Internet is gaming which enables players to play each other across the net. This is probably due to the fact that the games are not competitive enough for the user. This is where AI comes into the equation.
By designing games that already have graphics up to a high level the next task would be to make you characters as life-like as possible. Otherwise having interactive computer games with human-level AI This would involve physical characteristics and social behaviour within the game. By doing this it could provide the right environment for further research into human-level AI, as the games would be interacting with human users.
The types of games that I'm talking about are not Chess or Go, but more complex games such as Doom, Myth and Tomb Raider....
