Airbag

The airbag, or inflatable restraint system, or SRS(Supplemental Restraint System) is

a life safety device implanted in the front inside of the car. They can be found in the

steering wheel or the right dashboard. The inflated cloth bag stops the driver or the

passenger from hitting the dashboard, steering wheel, or the window.

The airbag system is made up of two major parts, the sensors and the bag. The

sensors under the hood react when the car is involved with a frontal collision of at least

12 ~ 15mph. That triggers an electrical signal that causes a chemical reaction in the

inflator module at the end of the bag. The cloth bag which is made out of a nylon is

inflated with a nitrogen gas which is safe, because the 80 percent of the air we breathe is

nitrogen gas, stops the crash victim from hitting the dash board or any other harmful

objects. Surprisingly, the entire inflation and deflation cycle takes less than 1/2 second.

Also, the speed of the airbag inflating is around 200 MPH.

According to the text book, the most frequent cause of death in collisions is injury to

the head and chest caused by hitting the steering assembly or windshield. However, air

bags help to prevent life threatening head and chest injuries. The NHTSA (National

Highway Traffic Safety Administration) reports airbags are 75 percent effective in

preventing serious head injuries and 66 percent effective in preventing chest injuries.

During this same time period, there were 87 deaths associated with airbags and 49 were

started to deploy. Most of the children were improperly...
