All And All About Corsica
Corsica is one of the most exciting and beautiful islands in the world. The islands economic life depends on tourism, where more than 80.000 people visit this island every year. (show pictures)
Over 80 % of the land is natural, which means that it is full of untouched forests and mountains, which makes it the least "spoilt" coastline of France.
Corsica is situated in the Tyrrhenian Sea, in the Western Mediterranean. The island extends over 8700 km. Sq. Its coast is about 1000 km long, in which 300 km. are beaches. It has amazing cliffs, long sandy beaches and many hidden caves.
Corsica is very mountainous and its highest point is Monte Cintu, which tops at 2710m. Corsica has the highest mountains and the most rives in the Mediterranean.
The climate there is Mediterranean, but winters can be cold and there's generally snow on the highest peaks of the mountains.
As I said before Corsica has a very rich history, which dates back to prehistoric times. The first settlers of the island were the Greeks, who founded the colony of Alalia, which is now called Aeria. Many tried to take over Corsica and succeeded. It has belonged to the Romans, Vandals and Lombard's. During the World War II it was occupied by Italian and German troops. Later on in the 1768, the French took control and Corsica became a province of France. It has then seen separatist movements. The island now has a regional parliament, with sharply limited powers.
Nowadays, the population is just below 250.000 inhabitants, where only half of them are truly Corsican. The language that is spoken there is mainly Corsican, which is listed as one of the fourteen most romantic languages just like Italian and French. Which isn't surprising because it was originated mainly from those two languages.
