American Dream In Death Of A Salesman

When Willy began his career as a salesman, it was a respectable American job, but as his environment evolves, it became something that was looked down upon. This shows how Willy's job as a salesman didn't quite reach the American dream that people try to achieve. The title "death of a salesman" has two completely different meanings. Willy told Howard that Dave Singleman had died the death of a salesman. He told Howard that after Dave died, "hundreds of salesmen and buyers were at his funeral. Things were sad on a lotta trains for months after that." Meanwhile, when Willy died, there were four people at his funeral. Charley said that "for a salesman, there is no rock bottom to the life…a salesman is got to dream…it comes with the territory."
A big indicator to one's success is their performance on the job. If a person is doing well, then they are successful. In the beginning of the play Willy comments on how he was "vital to New England". This is a great example of how Willy's distortion compromised his obtainment of success. In all reality he was not "vital to New England", but a hindrance to his company. This is one reason why Willy never obtained the American Dream.
