Anti-Semitism In The Novel The Moth Diaries

Basic expository

The main character of The Moth Diaries, by Rachel Klein, struggles with being a part of the Jewish minority at a Christian boarding school. For one thing, she notes that there are specific teachers who have a biased disliking for those practicing Judaism. "[We all were Jewish]. In the end, Miss Bobbie hated us all…Maybe Miss Rood makes sure there are always a few Jews at school to keep Miss Bobbie occupied." This shows that she notices that there are instances in which people of authority favor her less because of her heritage. A second reason I could tell that her being Jewish is a problem for is how the other students automatically lump her together in the category of the rest of the Jewish population at the school. "Now I understand why Betsy thought that Ernessa and I would hit it off together…We were the same type. I thought she said that because Ernessa is smart. She meant Jewish, as in you're the same type of creature from another planet." This shows that other students believe that because they share the same religion, they must have other traits in common, also. Lastly, she is troubled with adapting to the obligations of the other girls. "At my first assembly, I reached out for the red hymnbook…Was I supposed to sing a Christian hymn? Would I be punished if I refused to sing? Would I be punished if I did sing? Why had my mother sent me here?" This quote shows the obvious confusion experienced by the main character as to how to react when in a Christian gathering. So you see, there are obvious reasons as to why the main character (un-named throughout the entire novel) would be uncomfortable because of the anti-Semitism and other conflicts in attending a Christian school.
