Apes
Prince Siddhartha Gautama, who would later become the Buddha, was born in a small town called Kapilavastu in Nepal which is near the border of India around the 563 B.C. His father was Shuddhodan, the king of Sakyas. Siddhartha's mother was the beautiful Queen Maya, many wished to walk in her foot steps. "Of perfect form and bee-black tresses, fearless in heart and full of grace and virtue."(Wangu, 18) One day, Queen Maya was overwhelmed with inner peace and joy. Later that night, she dreamt of an elephant with six tusks holding a lotus flower visiting her. The elephant touched her right side, and when Queen Maya woke up, her son was miraculously conceived. She later then told her husband of the extraordinary dream she had. Shuddhodan rushed to find the town's soothsayer called Brahmins so that he himself could interpret Queen Maya's dream. Brahmin told them that their son would either become the greatest king in the world, or greatest ascetic, a holy man who practices self-denial. The soothsayer warnedShuddhodan and Maya that if Siddhartha saw only beauty, he would become the greatest king and if he witnessed the four passing sites, he would become a holy man. The soothsayer then nameed him Siddhartha, meaning "he whose aim is accomplished."(Ross, 20) A week later, Queen Maya head off to her fathers so that she could prepare for the birth. As she got off the chariot in the Lumbini Gardens, Queen Maya grabbed a hold of a sal tree branch. At that very moment, Siddhartha emerged from her right side and walked seven steps in each of the four directions making up a compass. With each one of Siddhartha's foot steps, a lotus flower would sprout out of the earth. He then announced "No further births have I to endure, for this is my last body. Now shall I destroy and pluck out by the roots the sorrow that is caused by birth and death."(Wangu, 19) Queen Maya sat with amazement and hugged her son as if she knew she wouldn't see him grow up.
