I interviewed at Swedish Covenant Hospital in Chicago, IL with the Mary Smith, vice president of nursing. After the interview I inquired what is the most important factor in making a good impression in an interview. Mary responded with a story she recently experienced.
A certain night nurse was asked to interview with Mary for a potential promotion. Her interview was scheduled right after her shift. Instead of coming in her scrubs, which would have been totally acceptable to Mary, this certain nurse brought a change of nice clothes so she would look professional for her interview. That spoke very loudly to Mary. Although it was only a change of clothes it showed so much more than that. It showed that this nurse was serious about her career and had respect for her superiors. It also showed that this nurse thought ahead and prepared for her interview. Needless to say this nurse got the promotion.
Clothing speaks to people. Clothing, or artifactuals, is a form of nonverbal communication. Artifactuals are described as accessories used to adorn our bodies. Clothes, jewelry, glasses, hats, purses, backpacks, briefcases, your writing pen, and even your smoking utensils, communicate to others the personality underneath it all. For that reason we can understand why formal attire commands more respect, attention and cooperation from others. Formal attire also often results in being perceived as more credible by others. These qualities are all consistent with Mary's choice.
