Assisted Reproduction
Background Information
Assisted Reproduction is an artificial process that allows infertile people to receive the blessing of having their own children. The Assisted Reproduction can be done in 2 ways; In Vitro Fertilization (IVF), Assisted Reproductive Technology(ART). ART is a process that increases the chance of pregnancy by artificially manipulating the chance of pregnancy. IVF is a fertilization that occurs in a test tube. In this process, the woman is given a hormonal drug (human menopausal gonadotropin) to make her super ovulate' which causes her ovaries to produce many ripe eggs'. Then the eggs are removed from her ovaries and placed into a test tube which sperm is added a few hours later. 75% of the eggs will be fertilized, but the defected babies will be thrown out which gives a success rate of 16.8%- 1 in 20 unborn babies will survive.
Values involved in this issue.
The values that are involved in this issue would be the respect for creation. The fact that nineteen babies out of twenty babies will be thrown out is against the idea of human life being precious from the moment of conception. Also, we are at the reverence of God as the only creator of life. Therefore, artificially assisting human procreation is against the divine authority of God.
Why the issue raises ethical' questions for Catholics
"I formed you in the womb, I knew you and before you were born, I consecrated you" (Jeremiah 1:5). On this scripture Pope John Paul 2 commented that "the life of every individual, from its very beginning, is part of God's plan
" God plans every human beings even before they are born, and creates in the image of himself. But the artificially assisting reproduction technique contradicts this statement for the children are planned and designed by their parents not by God. What will be the effect of human beings if they are created and designed by other humans not by God?
