In June 1944 the greatest seaborne invasion in history took place. It is now known as D-Day. It took place on the beaches of Normandy, France. There were five beaches in specific that were attacked they were Omaha, Sword, Juno, Gold and Utah. "More than 150, 000 British, Canadian and US soldiers were shipped across the English Channel to initiate the five beachheads."1 The official name for the invasion was "Operation Overload, as the Allied Invasion of France called it. "2 It was the result of years of detailed planning. The invasion was almost called off due to bad weather, but in time the Allied Commander-in-Chief; General Dwight D. Eisenhower made a very risky decision to proceed the attack. By nightfall, the beachheads were protected, but the lives of 2,500 soldiers were lost. "The liberation of German-occupied Western Europe had begun."3 There have been many attacks and wars against different countries in this world and Canada has played a significant role in many, including the unforgettable D-day.
"December 1943 the combined chiefs of staff of the Allies selected Eisenhower to head Operation Overlord."4 This was the code name for the most desirable command in the war. The invasion force that was to cross the English Channel, land in France, and push on into Germany. The invasion was set for the spring of 1944. British and American troops, already gathering in England for the invasion, numbered more than 50 divisions (more than 150,000 troops), with thousands of bombers, fighter planes, and ships. Eisenhower was named Supreme Commander of the Allied Expeditionary Forces. "He worked 20 hours a day; the men trained with live ammunition."5 The soldiers practiced from January until May. They were supported by over 5,000 planes, four engine bombers, which dropped 500 pound bombs, firing rockets or strafing with fifty caliber machine guns, along with 2000 fighting hips firing off cannons.
