A Child Called It
Part One
Dave Pelzer : Dave is the main character and narrator. David suffers severe child abuse at the hands of Mother. The story details his horrible childhood in a small California suburb. He overcomes remarkable odds and survived unthinkable torture. At the beginning of the story he is a small child; he is rescued as a fifth grader; in the Epilogue he is a grown man. The way he describes himself being abused is horrific, it will literally make you cry.
Catherine Roerva Pelzer : David's mother. When Dave is a small child she is referred to as "Mom"- she is beautiful, sweet, and nurturing. As she starts to become abusive, he refers to her as "Mother." As an abusive alcoholic, she treats her son (better known as "it") primarily as a slave. The true irony I see in her character, is the fact that she treats her other two sons as normal boys. The word "Mother" is not something she should be called. The way she treated her own son makes her a monster not a mother. I cant understand how any parent can treat their own child the way she treated her "slave."
Mr. Hansen : David's principle who finally reports his case to the police.
Mr. Ziegler : David's fifth grade homeroom teacher who talks with the police about what he has seen.
Miss Moss : David's fifth grade math teacher; she speaks with police. In second grade she became concerned about David and reported to the principal, who requested a meeting with his mother.
Part Two
One of the worst abuse cases in California's history came to an end on March 5, 1973. Dave Pelzer begins his incredible story as an abused child with his rescue in part one of a series, "A Child Called 'It'". Calling this book a "page turner" doesn't give it justice. Easy to read, but difficult to comprehend how any mother could treat her child this way.
Besides being horribly beaten, Dave was forced to eat his own vomit, swallow...
