A Child Called It
David Pelzer was born in 1961. As a child he lived somewhere in California, with his abusive mother and a "don't care" kind of father. Pelzer a retired aircrew member of the United States Air force, Dave played a major role in operations JUST CAUSE, DESERT SHIELD, and DESERT STORM. While serving in the Air Force, Dave worked in a Juvenile Hall and other programs involving "Youth at Risk" through out the state of California. In 1990, he was awarded the J.C Penney Golden Rule Award. In 1993, was honored as one of the Ten Outstanding Young Americans. In 1994 he was the only United Stated citizen to be awarded the Outstanding Young Persons of the World Award, in Kobe Japan. Dave also had the honor to carry the Olympic Torch for the 1996 Olympic Torch Relay.
The novel is written in seven chapters. "A Child Called It" is a story based on a real life little boy's tribulations with his mothers shocking abuse. The first part of Dave's life was idyllic in his memory--he says his family was "the Brady Bunch"--a loving mother and father with whom he enjoyed wonderful holidays and a happy trip to the Russian River. Everyone on the outside thought that David's family was perfect. No one in his neighborhood would have suspected anything was wrong. He was an extremely abused and also humiliated by his mother. In the beginning of the book he was remembering back to his past. He was a young boy that lived with a nurturing and loving family. His father was a hard working firefighter. He often left home for two or more days at a time. Mrs. Pelzer couldn't stand being alone. Mrs. Pelzer was nice and loving to David in special occasions such as childcare workers visit to the house. She cared and fed him right and let him play with his brothers. Not even when Dave's grandmother went to visit their house, was the mother a bit more easily on Dave.
