A Christian View On Ecology And The Environment
God created, blessed, and protected every living thing and commanded Christians to be faithful stewards over the earth and its creatures (NIV). God outlines the role of stewardship through His teachings and the life and ministry of Jesus. Among these teachings are love, compassion, action, and obedience. God carefully cautions the consequences that disobedience will bring, many of which are already evident in our world today. Throughout the Bible God has called us to faithfully care for His creation, therefore we must repent, change our heart, and take action to confront the environmental and ecological issues facing the world today.
Throughout Genesis chapter one, God blessed "everything that has the breath of life in it" (NIV). The creations that encompass our world are here for us to use, not abuse. God commanded Noah to take two of every animal with him on the ark in order to protect His creation. Noah took "clean and unclean animals" on the ark because God commanded him to protect them all (NIV). Laurens Van Der Post describes a communication made by an African tribal elder to a young boy illustrating the role of man and animals:
"Remember Little Cousin, that no matter how awful or insignificant, how ugly or beautiful it might look to you, everything in the bush has its own right to be there. No one can challenge this right unless compelled by some necessity of life itself" (Berry).
Each of God's creations has a right to life, it is our job to respect and protect this God-given right within the boundaries of reality.
The human race has enslaved the planet in order to maintain a lifestyle. Motivated by greed, we are destroying the delicate balance of ecosystems and forcing innumerable species into extinction. Each year acres of rainforests, clear-cut at an alarming rate, create pastures for beef cattle sold to the United States fast food industry.
