"Compare And Contrast The Ways In Which The Theme Of Love Is Developed In Any Of Three Poems We Have Looked At."
In my essay I will concentrate on comparing and contrasting the ways in which the theme of love is developed in three poems. I have chosen, as my three poems, 'Sonnet 43', 'Sonnet 44' by Elisabeth Barrett Browning and 'A Birthday' by Christina Rossetti. I will mention in my essay the subject of each poem, finding ways in which they are similar and different. I will mention abaout the speaker of each poem, the structure, themes and language of each poem comparing the three poems. I will then conclude my essay.
Women in the Victorian era were given a stereotypical view in which to follow. This consisted of cooking, cleaning, looking after the children and form 'the perfect wife'. Women were referred to as 'the angel in the house'. This was a popuorised image of women as a welcoming light for her husband to come home at the end of a working day ( women were mocked at the thought of a decent job, they earned money if they needed to by fulfilling practical labour with a limit as to what they were and were not forbidden to use). As most women were 'housewives', the topic of love for their husband was highly reoccuring, as was death. In the three poems, love is the theme throughout. It shows us how the developement of love continues to progress. In my essay I will concentrate on comparing and contrasting the ways in which the theme of love is developed in three poems.
