"Elle" Anilitical Text Response

Audience: Someone who has read the book "Elli", or who wants to know about the suffering of the Jews in the holocaust.
Form: Analytical text response to the text "Elli, coming of age in the holocaust" written by Livia E. Bitton Jackson.
Purpose: To analytically respond to a question to do with the book "Elli"
Topic question: Elli's survival depended upon good fortune more than her incredible will to survive. Do you agree?
Contention: I believe that Elli needed her will to survive as much as her good fortune to endure the suffering that she experienced through out the holocaust.

Elli's survival depended equally upon her luck and determination to survive. Without either one of these, Elli's chances of survival would have severely diminished.

Elli was a very lucky young girl, throughout of her life we see that there were many times when her life could have so tragically ended. Elli was very fortunate to be able to stay so close to her mother and have occasional sighting of her brother Bubi (Jackson 1994 Chapter 4). There were many times Elli and her mother could have been separated from each other. By being able to be together Elli and her mother gave each other strength and reassurance which helped them both to cope with the war.

While arriving at the Auschwitz concentration camp Elli was confronted by an SS god, Dr Mengele, a German SS Officer who only noticed her because of her looks, her long golden hair, blue eyes and the fact that she was rather tall caught the soldiers' attention. Elli's looks saved her from the certain death in the gas chambers, because the soldier allowed her to go with her mother because she looked a lot older than she was, if she was any younger or smaller she would have been separated from her mother and forced to go to the gas chambers.
