A Fare Well To Arms
The influence of the war on Frederick Henry has affected the person who he became. He suddenly lost faith in the war, not being able to be with the loved one and also he gained feelings of alienation and no connection with the war. Frederick Henry was deserted.
Frederick Henry loses his faith in the war by witnessing senseless deaths for his friend and other soldiers. "They would shoot us for Germans!" (A Farewell to Arms 216) which shows how confused all the soldiers and the Italian army in particularly remained. "He was afraid we would get killed"(217). All the Italian army was not so afraid of the Germans killing them as of their own Italians killing them. The Italians made their retreat more complicated.
The character Frederick Henry deserted to be with Catherin was afraid that Catherin would lose Frederick as she lost her old fiancé. "We'll go wherever you say but please find some place to go right away" (251), this quote shows how desperate the couple are and shows that they are ready to go anywhere where it would be safe for Frederick and Catherin to get married and raise their unborn child.
Being deserted from the army, Frederick Henry feels no patriotism. "I've Deserted from the army"(251) Quote expresses Frederick Henry's pain of not understanding, not being connected to the army
Loosing faith in the army, not being connected with the army except through the loving Catherin but also not being able to be with her were three of many more pressures on the character Frederick Henry which made him a different person.
