Abstract
The effect of oil of oregano on yeast activity was researched. The hypothesized results were that if oil of oregano was added to yeast, then the yeast activity would decrease. Rate of yeast activity was measured by timing how long it took for 5 ml of a yeast/water/sugar solution to produce 5ml of CO2. The results of the experiment supported the hypothesis and showed a higher rate of yeast activity in the control with no oil of oregano than in test group B with 5 drops of oil of oregano in 20 ml of test group A or in test group B with 5 drops of olive oil in 20 ml of test group A.
Introduction
Materials and Procedures
The materials used for this experiment were Fleischmann's active dry yeast, The Vitamin Shoppe
An ice bath was set to 0°C, a water bath was set to room temperature (24°C), and a boiling water bath was set to 100°C. 5ml of catalase were placed at 100 units/ml in each of 4 test tubes. 1 test tube was placed in each of the water baths. 40 ml of 1% H2O2 was placed in each of 4 vials. Depth of the H2O2 was recorded. 1 vial was placed in the ice bath and 3 were left at room temperature (because heat will denature hydrogen peroxide). The catalase and substrate were allowed to incubate at each temperature for approximately 5 minutes, then the reaction time was tested by dipping a filter paper disc into the catalase at that temperature, draining it, and then dropping it into substrate at the same temperature. The second room temperature vial of hydrogen peroxide was used for the boiled catalase. The time it took for the filter paper disc to rise at each...
