?Junkie?Stephen Reid

The personal story ?Junkie? by Stephen Reid contains many key themes and writing

techniques, which has been able to make a huge difference on the reader?s insight of the

personal story. This personal story mainly talks about how a man learns from his past

decisions and uses this to improve his future. The story basically starts off with a very

young boy who ?has just been given [his] first taste of morphine? (165). This boy who is

also the author of the personal story, tells us how he was drugged at the age of eleven and

because of his addiction to morphine, he goes onto try harder drugs. This causes him to

run away from home and do things such as make the wrong friends and do harder drugs

which ?led [him] to the penitentiary? (167). Throughout his journey, Stephen has met

people who wanted to care for him but he himself didn?t allow these people into his life.

This highlights a theme about letting those who want to care for you into your life.

Stephen met many people that wanted to care for him, but as a mistake he didn?t allow

these people into his life, but by doing so could?ve changes his life completely. We learn

that through his experiences at home he never felt wanted, which may have caused him to

feel heavily neglected. The first time Stephen overdosed he was admitted in a hospital.

He tells us how he ?woke up in St.Pauls hospital looking up at then gentle face of a

nurse. She was touching the tracks on [his] arms and crying. [He] closed [his] eyes, then

snuck out as soon as she left the room? (175). In my opinion, that was a huge mistake

that Stephen made, if he had accepted these people he could?ve been a completely
