Kurt Donald Cobain was born February 20, 1967 in Hoquaim, Washington. A few months after his birth, his auto mechanic father and cocktail waitress mother relocated to the small logging town of Aberdeen, Washington. The family often relocated because of the many job dismissals the parents experienced. Moving was a stressful time, Kurt being so young. Kurt was a happy child who seemed to smile often, unable to wait for the next day to come. His kindergarten teacher saw this genuine liveliness as a problem, suggesting Kurt see a psychiatrist for his hyperactivity during class time. She claimed he often left his seat during class, and had difficulty engaging in activities quietly. A psychiatrist prescribed Ritalin, a highly addictive and physically dangerous drug to chemically suppress the extra energy in Kurt and to make him sit still. After a few months on the drug, Kurt became more independent and kept to himself. He loved to draw and play the drums. He also had an imaginary friend he named "Buddah". A breakdown came into Kurt's life shortly after he turned seven. His parents decided to get a divorce. His younger sister Kim had just been born. The divorce was extremely hard and emotional for Kurt. Like most children affected by divorce, he felt guilty and responsible for it. Instead of being able to live with his parents, Kurt moved in and out of various relatives houses, having little contact with either biological parent. He developed a chronic respiratory illness that forced young Kurt to develop anti-social behaviors and become withdrawn. When Cobain turned eleven, he heard and was very much captivated by the Britain band "The Sex Pistols". Cobain and his friend Krist Novoselic continued to listen together and follow British bands of the post punk era. Kurt's father remarried a younger woman named Jenny.
