"Legalize It"

Legalize It

In our country there are several controversial issues and topics. Among these topics and issues are gay marriage, euthanasia, abortion, and the drug policy of our country. However, I have decided to write about the recent polls in Denver on whether or not Marijuana should be legalized. I believe that this topic is relevant to the drug policy of our country because some drugs are legal, and yet less harmful drugs are illegal in our country. Through stating why this topic is related to culture wars, analyzing the story and the topic, and through giving my own views on the matter I hope to evaluate the legalization of Marijuana legitimately.
It is of no shock that drugs are illegal in our country. Furthermore, it is well known that our legal system has outlawed several drugs for various reasons. First of all drugs are harmful to their users and can cause long term problems in the user's health. However, it is hypocritical to allow the use of one type of drug, but at the same time outlaw the use of another type of drug, especially if the drug that is illegal is statistically less harmful to its users. People who tend to be paternalistic feel that individuals should not willingly indulge in activities that will obviously cause them harm in some sort of way, although we do not hear about cases of cigarette smoke or alcohol consumption which cause several cases of addiction and death each year. Together the two, alcohol and nicotine, cause about half a million deaths each year. Tobacco use alone causes more deaths than "HIV, illegal drug use, alcohol use, motor vehicle injuries, suicides, and murders combined" (White 312). However, under Mills Harm Principle it is believed to be okay for people to take part in certain situations, whether they cause harm to the individual or not, as long as the individual is not causing harm to others while participating in this activity.
