A Letter To The President, Lyric Paper

Samantha McGarity American History 2nd Hr.
Tupac Shakir was very strong with his words, both as a person and as a songwriter. The majority of Tupac's lyrics were deep and dealt with political and social subjects. I chose his song, "Letter to the President", which was released on December 21, 1999. It was one of Tupac's strongest written songs. This particular song is very deep in showing how the government looks past many of the major problems in America.
One of the first lines in he song states, "Oh youse a ball in the White House, I hope you comfortable cause yo I spend my nights out with the lights out, under the safety of darkness, amongst the crazed and the heartless." This statement shows how the president doesn't know what it is like and how hard it is to live on the streets. Tupac is trying to convey how little the government does to try to keep people off the streets.
One of his following lines reads: "On a mission listen more chips my goal and position, Trippin to drastic measures tryin to get stacks of cheddar." In this, he is trying to show how a lot of the crime on the streets relates with just trying to eat and get by. When things get bad, people are going to do what they have to do to make money so they can survive. Sometimes that means stealing or even dealing drugs. Its not what they want to do but there are times where they have no other choice. The government see how hard it is for these people to get by and what leads them to do such things, but instead just look at them as bad people and refrains from offering them help.
In the chorus his lyrics read: "Dear Mr. President, tell me what to do, these niggaz actin up in the hood, send mo' troopsÂ…" This particular part of his song conveys how rough it can get in poorer areas.
