a musical experience
My musical Experience
The piece of music I chose, as my experience did not start out as profoundly as it
ended. "Higher" by Creed was just another popular song. You could feel Creeds' passion
by the accents placed sporadically throughout. The bright tone color crossed with lyrics
sung with a happy, elated feeling was in perfect contrast to the one chorus of rich and
depressing timbre.
The use of instruments such as guitar are typical however the drums give a
fantastic beat as well as on occasional syncopation. Through the song moderato or a
moderate tempo could be heard. The pattern is a very strong ternary or three-part form.
This song has a very common musical style for the times. Had it been written
twenty years ago it, perhaps would not be as popular.
Shortly after it's release Creed was bombarded with critics and fans stating they
had gone Christian rock. The reason being, the lyrics speak of a "higher place where the
streets are gold and blind men see." Whether or not this song is classified as religious it
still held my attention only as a good song. That changed after an awakening moment.
My twenty one year old cousin, Matthew, had bought the C.D. and burned me a
copy. Two and a half months later he died of a drug overdose. On the way to the funeral
the song came on the radio, I had to pull over as for the first time in a week I was crying
tears of joy. The song my cousin brought into my life showed me that even in death he
was still with me and as sad as his life had been he was in a better place.
