A Novel Software Radio Platform Based on General PC and Network
This paper proposed a novel Software Radio Platform Based on General PC and Network. On the platform, the interface to the communication front-end is separated from the workstation task, which ease the workstation to a certain degree; the soft-registration protocols are adopted here to set up the parallel distributed data processing. In the platform, there is no exclusive central control unit, and the management and control of the network are dispersed to many nodes, which improve the system performance. The system performance is also given in this paper.
I. INTRODUCTION
Recent years have witnessed the great development of personal computers and networks. If a Software Radio system can be built on general PC and network, it will enjoy following advantages versus those based on DSP and FPGA. First, since PCs and networks are very common, the system could be constructed on any existent cluster of workstations. Building a base station is easy, which only needs installing an adaptive card and corresponding software. Second, the traffic on the Internet continues to grow at over 30% per month with no apparent end in sight. As a destined trend, wireless communications must support multimedia and Internet accessing. The platform composed by PC and network could easily be integrated into Internet. In summary, this structure is "softer" than DSP-FPGA scheme, more flexible, and closer to the goal of Software Radio[3].
However, when we adopt the computer network as the data processing platform, there are two basic problems we must take into account: how to make the high speed data flow that come out of the RF-front and then the A/D become the signal that can be processed by the computer; how to control the computer sets to process the data effectively and parallel.
