A Peaceful Way Out
Euthanasia has two different sides to it, the inhumane practice that abruptly ends a person's life or a more practical view, the practice that ends the suffering and pain of an individual that you love. Many people argue that euthanasia and physician-assisted suicide go against religion and depreciate the sanctity of life. If this is so, then why do many people have living wills and advance directives that allow their loved ones or caretakers to legally "pull the plug" after a certain period of time? There are always two sides to every story, but in the case of euthanasia and physician-assisted suicide, most people just see the sympathetic side for their family. It is not only inhumane, but it is cruel to force a person to stay alive against their will. Although there practices are often referred to as "murder", when looked at closely, should a person that is suffering be forced to live against the nature of their bidding? America is all about people's rights and protecting those rights, if this were so, why wouldn't a person also have the right to end their own suffering when or as they wish?
The problem with euthanasia is not so much the practices, but the common misconceptions about the practices that have evolved from rumors and past cases that have abused the procedures. There are four different types of euthanasia that can be examined and then there is physician-assisted suicide. Out of the five practices, physician-assisted suicide is the least frowned upon. Physician assisted suicide "occurs when a physician provides a medical means of death, usually a prescription for a lethal amount of medication, that the patient takes on his or her own," (Dubois138). This is considered the most acceptable because of the fact that the physician does not directly administer the lethal does of the prescription, but makes the prescription available to be used as a form of suicide to the patient.
