The movie starts setting in the United States in pre-World War II. Two of the main characters, Rafe and Danny, are shown as little boys playing out on a farm. This beginning sequence shows the boys playing with an airplane they made. When Danny's father comes to get him, he hits Danny to the ground. In his defense, Rafe comes and hits his father over the head with a piece of wood yelling, "Get away from him you dirty German" signifying the tension between the world at the time.
When Rafe and Danny grow up they become U.S. Army Pilots. Rafe volunteers to go into the war for the British against the Germans. After each successful mission after another, his luck suddenly changes and is shot down and assumed to be dead. After he is believed to be dead, his girlfriend falls for his best friend, Danny. Danny and Evelyn engage in sexual intercourse and she becomes pregnant. The day she finds out she is pregnant, Rafe "returns from the dead" and assumes everything is back to normal. But it isn't, he finds out that Danny and Evelyn had been seeing each other. Rafe leaves and then Danny finds him drinking at a bar. After words are exchanged a skirmish between the two friends breaks out but is broken up by the military police. Drunk and intoxicated, they flee to a cliff where Danny explains that how he doesn't know how the relationship between them could ever be repaired. Meanwhile, the Japanese have been planning a massive attack on Pearl Harbor to extinguish the entire Pacific Fleet in "one blow".
On Sunday December 7, 1941 everyone wakes up to find Japanese bomber and fighter planes soaring overhead. The United States government was not aware that this attack was going to happen so they were not prepared to fight. The Japanese, knowing they have accomplished "surprise" continued their mass destruction upon Pearl Harbor.
Rafe and Danny found themselves trying to defend the island with their airplane skills.
