A Political Discourse Concerning Racism In American Government

I'll admit it - the remarks made by Trent Lott a few days ago were dumb. Yes, that's right...DUMB. The leader of the United States' Senate should be much more cautious about what he says "off the cuff." This is a vital part of his job, and he should do it better. I am greatly discomforted though by the left-wing media campaign that has been launched since Lott's controversial remark last week.

To begin with, one must understand that Lott's "racist" remarks were not in and of theselves "racist". They were labeled that way based on the idea that Lott was "speaking in code" to the "good-ole boys" of the south listening because Strom Thurmond used to be a segregationist (note: the key word here is "used," meaning past tense... no more. After all, who could forget that 24 hour and 37 minute non-stop fillibuster in 1963? Simply amazing!

But, let's assume that Lott was speaking in code to his fellow conservatives present at the party, does that mean the whole Republican party is racist (as many key Democrats claim)? I think not - for several reasons...
