Representations And Truth
Truth has often been regarded as a universal truth which has transcended language and contextual barriers. Truth is defined as a verified or indisputable fact which is universally accepted and it can be seen that whoever owns the power also possesses the power to control the truth. Frontline reinforces this view through satire and caricature and additionally Peter Weir's The Truman Show supports the notion of power controls the truth. In contemporary society it is accepted that the media has considerable power and with it comes the ability and willingness to manipulate the truth.
Frontline by Rob Sitch et al. is a satirical take on the vulture-usque world of current affairs as morals and social responsibilities are dispensed in the quest for ratings. It is a mockumentary' exploring the dubious practices behind the scenes as the program battles with other networks and among themselves for credibility and exposure.
Two episodes of the Frontline series which shows how power enables the truth to be shifted are The Siege and Add Sex and Stir. Both show the willingness of the program's team to cross moral and ethical boundaries and bend the truth in the quest for ratings.
The Siege is an important aspect in the notion of truth, as Mike Moore and the team seek to sensationalise what really occurs. The hypocrisy is clearly evident as they strive to objectively present the truth. By satirising the conduct of the reporters, Sitch et. al. show how it is going against their own code of ethics and the true nature and depravity of current affairs journalism.
