This film was really interesting and beautiful because it was based on a real life story. The family has problems and each member had their differences and despite this, they surpassed them as a family. The main characters were the father, Mr. MacLean, who was a Presbyterian minister, Paul MacLean as an infamous newspaper writer, and Norman MacLean who was a literature professor.
The Minister MacLean was always trying to show his sons the right ways; he taught them about life, and he gave them the best education he could, so they would have a bright future ahead of them. He taught them how to fly-fishing, throughout the story. This hobby became an important symbol, for them this was the only thing they shared as a family, the only thing that symbolized their love and union; all the walks in the afternoon and all the times they were together to have fun and enjoy fly-fishing, where they could forget about the problems they had.
All their childhood Paul and Norman lived in Montana, to Paul this was the place he wanted to spend his life, he worked for a newspaper and the thing he most enjoyed was drinking and playing cards with people that maybe didn't like him or that were in a bad business. Unlike Paul, Norman decided to go far away from home, in 1919 he went to the Pacific, a trip to the unknown for him, until 1926 when he returned home; he decided to apply for several teaching positions. The perceptions Norman and Paul had about life and all they wanted was different, but, at the same time these differences were the things that made them closer each time they were together. They respected each other and their love never changed.
"The life is not a work of art and the moment could not last". At the end Paul made the decision to not let anyone help him, until one day when Norman receive the news that his brother was dead, he was beaten up until he die and dumped in an alley.
