"A Separate Peace" and "Dead Poet's Society" are very similar in different aspects. They are both based on the same setups in the environmental elements and the ideas leading to the investigation of the dark side of human beings. It is obvious that we can see the parallelism between their settings, characters, and themes.
First of all, the settings in both stories provide many similarities. The major parts of scenes are set in boy-only private schools located in New England: Devon and Hell-ton. Furthermore, the parents of students and the staffs of the school are very traditional in their thoughts and ways of living, which reflects the conservatism of that era.
Even more important, of the major characters in both stories, Finny and Neal are very alike not only in their life styles but also in their spirits. Since they appear in the stories, they are always the ones who dominate various interpersonal activities such as the Blitzball, the Super Suicidal Society of the Summer Session, the play and the Dead Poet's Society, in which they reveal their ability of inspiring other students as natural leaders. Moreover, living for what they believe in, they can have their unique thoughts towards everything, prove their existences, and enjoy their lives. For instance, Neal works hard and asks his father for permission to perform in the play, which is just like Finny keeps trying to join the army after his injury which causes his achievable and talented sport comes to an end.
Last but not least, both stories follow resembling themes. In the beginnings, the students enjoy the naïve joy based on their superficial friendships. However, as the serious troubles break into the simple school life, the relationships among students, friends, teachers, and students' parents are covered with a tragic shadow.
