Setting
This story takes place in 1957 at Devon School in New Hampshire, when the protagonist flashes back fifteen years to tell the adventures his friends and him had through their experiences at Devon School.
Plot
The story starts when the protagonist, Gene, returns to Devon School and shifts back to tell the story of the days Gene and his friend Phineas roamed the school. Phineas or Finny is a daredevil, he'll do any thing for the thrill. Gene is more of the calm, normal type of person but, when Finny and him are together they get crazy.
That summer of 1942 Finny and Gene came up with an idea to start their own club. They called this club the "Super Suicide Society of the Summer", a club for exciting and dangerous things. One day Finny and Gene decided to perform and dangerous stun which was to jump of a limb into a river. Gene lost his balance and Finny was their to rescue him. Gene realized that he owed his life to Finny. Soon many of their friends joined the club, when they had enough people they came up with a game called "blitz ball", which is a mixture of football and rugby.
Finny admits that Gene is his best friend, Gene is truly touched. That day they decide to jump off the tree into the river. While Finny is on the limb, Gene, is holding onto it suddenly Gene moves the limb. Finny loses his balance and fall, his leg was shattered. That same summer Finny is sent home, being the great swimmer that he is , Finny will never be able to swim the same ever again. Gene feels guilty for what happened to Finny, Finny tells him that he is crazy, and that it was no one's fault.
