sexually transmitted disease

Sexually-transmitted diseases (STDs) also known as Sexually-transmitted infection (STIs), are diseases that are commonly transmitted between partners through some form of sexual activity, most commonly vaginal intercourse. It was firstly known as Venereal disease (VD), until around 1990's where health officials introduced a new term to the public in order to improve the clarity of their warnings. According to the statistics from Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there are over 15 million cases of STD cases reported annually in the United States alone. The purpose of this report is to gather relevant information from print and online sources for dissemination among the public especially teenagers and hope to create an awareness among them. This report will cover transmission, the different types of the disease, treatment and preventive measures.

Since STI and STD might sound similar and they are used quite interchangeably, that does not mean that they both are the same. "Sometimes the terms STI and STD are used interchangeably. This can be confusing and not always accurate, so it helps first to understand the difference between infection and disease." quoted from www.etharc.org

The term STD refers only to infections that are causing symptoms or problems. The term STI refers to infection with any germ that can cause an STD, even if the infected person does not show any symptoms. Depending on the STI, a person may or may not be able to spread the infection if he or she does not have signs of disease. However, a person can spread HIV infection (STI) at any time, even if they have not developed symptoms of for example Aids (STD).
