A Software Piracy Report
Introduction:
Software piracy can be defined as the unauthorized use or reproduction of copyrighted or patented material. We have chosen this topic because there have been many cases of legal software products. According to David M. Stone of University Laboratory High School in Urbana, Illinois, "each pirated piece of software takes away from company profits, reducing funds for further software development initiatives." It is believed that copying software illegally is a type of piracy in our industry.
It is believed that software piracy began in the early 1960s when software was distributed in the box along with your hardware by the manufacturers. By the late 1960s, manufacturers had to start selling their software separately from the hardware.
Methods of Piracy:
People who pirate software commonly copy the software using a compact disk burner. A common method is by "borrowing" the compact disk they wish to copy from a friend or acquaintance and copy it onto a blank compact disk using a compact disk burner.
Another method common to society is to download the program off the internet. Some pirates actually sell these programs through internet websites and make a profit; others simply upload the programs onto the internet for people who wish to upgrade their computer. A perfect example of this kind of website is Download.com. This website features programs that you can see in the store that can cost anywhere from $20 to $150 but on this website, you can get the program at no cost. The thing that people don't realize is that when you download software off of the internet, you are forfeiting your right to technical support and program upgrades from the developer. These are perks that you can only get if you are a licensed user.
