A Walk To Remember
Love is All-powerful Force
In the movie A Walk to Remember, Jamie Sulivan, played by Mandy Moore, states to Landon Carter, "your act only works on an audience." This remark describes Landon's nature prior to his transformation, showing his need to be popular. Similarly, in the book, Landon Carter, from A Walk to Remember is a dynamic character in the tragic love story. In the beginning of the novel, Landon is a typical cocky teenager, who enjoys mocking others and being popular. However, as the novel progresses, Landon matures and an unexpected friendship evolves. As a result of spending countless hours with Jamie, Landon transforms and learns the power of love. From the moment Landon is introduced, his sarcastic attitude towards others is evidence of his inner character.
Raised in a wealthy and privileged family, Landon's financial status ruels his desire to feel superior. He chooses to simply spend time with the other popular kids. The prospect of stepping out of the popular crowd is an uneasy idea for Landon. The most down to earth, compassionate young lady, Jamie appears to be "an unearthly outsider" in Landon's eyes. Landon Carter and his friends taunt Jamie's father, Reverend Sullivan as a hobby in church. Landon believes "Reverend Sullivan is ghostly" and ridicules the Reverend. Without formally meeting Reverend Sullivan, Landon makes rude comments to pass the time away while sitting in church. Due to her Christen background, Jamie takes pride in carrying, as well as reading the bible around school, although others criticize her "strange ways." Landon and his crowd are among those who criticize and, who enjoy watching Jamie read her bible, while discussing her weird nature. He feels uneasy about himself as a person and therefore fulfills the feelings with laughter by mocking others. After Jamie requests Landon to be the lead male role in the play, a friendship develops between Jamie and Landon.
