Propaganda Use Of The Olympic Games

The Olympic games is a very famous event and is watched by the whole world. For many people it has been an ideal place to shoe their political views. The origonal games was supposed to be about coming together and forgetting prejudice to improve society. The IOC have found it increasingly difficult to avoid the confruntation the Games has to deal with. The Olympic Games has been prevented from happening three times because of war. These were 1916,1940 and 1944. After the second world war the next Games was held in London in 1944. The goverment used this event to let the world Know they won the war and how powerfull they were. To show they didnt like Germany and Japan the were not invited.

However the before the second world war the 1936 Games were held in Berlin and were used by Hitler to promote Nazi Propaganda. Hitler wanted to let the world know how good his regiem was and he did this by showing his success at the Games. Hitler was the first person to realise the importance of training insport and so set up training camps in Germany previous to the compatition. Therefore Germany did very well in the Games. But one person named Jessie Owens, a black man won four Gold medals. However he was completely egnored and did not recieve and medals.

In 1968 Mexico city held the Olympic Games. The Mexico goverment desperatly wanted to show the world how rich they were and were prepared to spend a gteat amount of money to do so. There were many poor peasants in Mexico at this time and they were very angry that the money was not been spent on them and these facilities would not benafit them as they could not aford to use them. Therefor they retaliated and rioted during the games. The goverments solution was to shoot them and over two hundred people died.
